In a fascinating exploration of the relationship between music and architecture, Ma plays Bach's 2nd suite for unaccompanied cello in computer-generated three-dimensional recreations of Piranesi's prison etchings. Ma and Epstein work together to create right acoustics for the imaginary space in which Ma performs, with comments from Piranesi scholar John Wilton-Ely, architect Moshe Safdie and composer Richard Danielpour. One of a series of films presenting Ma's collaborations with artists from different disciplines, using Bach suites as starting points for new works in those artists' mediums. |
